Environmental Health Services

The Metropolitan Environmental Health Department provides services that promote and protect public health and safety through collaboration innovation and strategic standard enforcement

Food Handler's Certificate

Food handlers or food vendors medical is done solely at the metropolitan assembly by designated laboratories with qualified laboratory technicians assigned to them.

Note:This process takes two (2) weeks to complete and only medically fit clients will be issued with the food handler’s card.

Hospitality Premises

The underlisted services are provided by the assembly under Hospitality Premises management:

  • Standards enforcement
  • Safety
  • Health impact
  • Sanitation
  • Pest control
  • Environmental and health impact control

Industrial Premises

The underlisted services are provided by the assembly under Industrial Premises management:

  • Standard and environmental monitoring
  • Prevent and control pollution
  • Health and safety
  • Environmental monitoring

Disinfection & Disinfestation

For this service to be undertaken, an application letter should be addressed to the Metropolitan Director (Metro Public Health Department).

Destruction of Unwholesome Items

For this service to be undertaken, an application letter should be addressed to the Metropolitan Director (Metro Public Health Department) specifying the item(s) to be destroyed and its quantities.

Suitability Health Certificates

For this service to be undertaken, a visit or an application letter should be addressed to the Metropolitan Director (Metro Public Health Department).

Environmental Monitoring Control

The Assembly monitors and controls environmental nuisances such as noise, smoke and dust. Complaints of such should be made at the Metro Public Health Department. A letter indicating the address and signatories of the affected persons should be attached as a supporting document.

Grave Space Acquisition

All burials undertaken in the Cape Coast Metropolis must be permitted by the asssembly, even after the acquisition of a burial permit from Births and Deaths Department. Whether at a public, private or a family cemetary. To obtain a grave space you will need the medical cause of death from an approved health institution.

Burial of Infectious Bodies

For this service to be undertaken, an application letter should be addressed to the Metropolitan Director (Metro Public Health Department).

Pauper Burial / Unclaimed Bodies

For this service, the following are required;

  • Police (Coroner’s certificate from court)
  • Letter from Police or verbal complain to the Director

Note: All cases requiring Pauper burials should be reported to the police first.

Exportation Of Human Ash, Human Body or Parts

For this service, the following are required;

  • Application letter addressed to the Director (Metro Public Health Department)
  • Cause of death (communicable diseases will not be exported)
  • Embalmment Certificate (specifying the chemical used)
  • Proof of membership of cremation society (if a Ghanaian)
  • Photocopy of passport
  • Receipt of Payment of gazetted fee

Exhumation

For this service, the following are required;

  • Application letter addressed to the Director (Metro Public Health Department)
  • Court Order (From a Higher Court)
  • Copy of burial permit
  • Death certificate
  • Cause of death
  • Identification of the deceased person
  • Identification of grave or burial place
  • Receipt of Payment of gazetted fee
