Cape Coast Metro Assembly

The Cape Coast Metropolis

Cape Coast is the only Metropolis out of the Twenty (23) districts in the Central Region. Cape Coast Metropolis lies within latitudes 5◦ 20’ and longitudes 1◦ 11’ to 1◦ .41’ West of the Greenwich Meridian. The Metropolis is bounded to the south by the Gulf of Guinea, west by the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem, East by the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District, and to the north by the Twifu Heman Lower Denkyira District. It occupies an Area of approximately 122 square kilometres, with the farthest point at Brabedze, about 17 kilometres from Cape Coast, the capital of the Metropolis as well as the Central Region. The Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) was established initially as a municipal Assembly by L.I. 1373 in 1987 and after twenty years of existence elevated to Metropolitan status by L.I. 1927 in February, 2007.
The strategic location of Cape Coast, located between the major cities in the country, namely Kumasi, Accra and Takoradi, as well as educational centre and tourist hub of Ghana provides an opportunity to develop the service industry.

Cape Coast Metro Assembly

THE ASSEMBLY

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly has sixteen (16) Departments and other Units with Heads of Departments who all report directly to the Metropolitan Coordinating Director (MCD) and ultimately to the Metropolitan Chief Executive (also referred to as the Mayor). The General Assembly meetings are presided over by the Presiding Member (PM). The General Assembly has a Membership of 66 comprising of 41 Elected Members, 25 Government Appointees, 2 Members of Parliament and the Metro Chief Executive who also chairs the Executive Committee.

These Sub-Committees perform deliberative functions and submit recommendations to the Executive committee for further deliberation and then to the General Assembly for final decisions and implementation. The Fourteen (14) Sub-Committees include; Social Services, Finance & Administration, Development Planning, Revenue Mobilization, Justice & Security, Education, Works, Environment, Youth & Sports, Culture & Trade Tourism and Industry, Disaster Management, Food & Agriculture, Health, Women & Children.
