Fire safety awareness took centre stage in Cape Coast on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as the Mayor, George Justice Arthur, joined the Central Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service for an inter-market fire safety quiz competition at Kotokoraba Market.
The event, led by Regional Fire Commander Merinder Mary Attigah-Mensah, brought together market women from Kotokoraba, Mankessim, and Kasoa in a lively and educational contest aimed at promoting fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
Organised as part of ongoing public education efforts, the competition provided a platform to equip traders with essential knowledge on fire safety practices, including prevention measures and effective response strategies in the event of an outbreak.
Addressing participants, Hon. Arthur commended the Fire Service for its proactive and innovative approach to community engagement, stressing the importance of fire safety awareness in protecting lives, property, and livelihoods—particularly within busy market environments.
He further urged traders to take fire safety seriously and apply the knowledge gained to help prevent avoidable incidents.
The initiative highlights the growing emphasis on public education as a key strategy in reducing fire outbreaks and enhancing safety across major commercial centres in the metropolis.
