Urban Roads Department

The Department of Urban Roads, under the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, is responsible for maintaining and creating accessible road infrastructure within the metropolis. The Department is established under the Urban Roads Act and operates under the Ministry of Roads and Highways framework.

To provide a cost-effective and sustainable integrated road transport system to ensure accessibility, safety and reliability for national development and the improvement of the quality of life of the people of Cape Coast Metropolis.

Core Functions & Responsibilities

  • Advise the Metropolitan Assembly on the formulation and implementation of Road Policy in the Metropolis.
  • Collect data for planning and development of roads and other related infrastructure in the Metropolis.
  • Design roads and related facilities within the roads network including traffic management and safety.
  • Construct roads and related facilities.
  • Establish and maintain a database on roads infrastructure in the Metropolis.
  • Provide for traffic planning, management and safety interventions.
  • Provide pedestrian and non-motorized facilities.
  • Supervise road construction and maintenance works by contractors.
