Legal Department

Section 78 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) lists the Legal Department as one of sixteen (16) departments of a Metropolitan Assembly as indicated in the Second Schedule to the Act.

According to the Staffing Norms of the Local Government Service developed in December 2014, the Legal Department is to be composed of Solicitors and Sub-Professional Staff. The Metropolitan Legal Department consists of the Office of the Metropolitan Solicitor and the Marriage Registry.

Mission

To provide high-quality, professional legal advice, representation and regulatory compliance services that support the effective governance and decision-making of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly.

Core Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to the Assembly.
  • Assist or facilitate the drawing up of rules and regulations to guide the activities of the Assembly.
  • Represent the Assembly in all legal proceedings.
  • Facilitate the interpretation of rules, laws and regulations to enhance the conduct of the Assembly's business.
  • Provide legal advice on matters relating to contracts.
  • Registration of marriages.
  • Handle all matters relating to acquisition and disposal of land by the Assembly.
  • Draft bye-laws, resolutions and other legal instruments for the Assembly.
