On Friday, 26th June 2026, the Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur, together with the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, Hon. George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, joined the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, at the historic Cape Coast Castle as part of the President’s two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Central Region.

A major highlight of the event was a captivating theatrical presentation by students of the School of Performing Arts, led by Dr. Karim, which portrayed scenes from the transatlantic slave trade. The powerful performance reflected the painful history associated with Cape Coast Castle and emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and collective memory.

Addressing participants at the event, President Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the restoration and preservation of Ghana’s forts and castles. He noted that increased attention would be given to these heritage sites through the 2027 national budget, with the aim of safeguarding their historical significance and enhancing their role in promoting tourism and cultural education.

The visit underscored the enduring importance of Cape Coast Castle as a symbol of Ghana’s history and reinforced the shared responsibility of stakeholders to protect and promote the country’s heritage for future generations.
