Environmental Health Department

The Environmental Health and Management Department has the mandate to ensure that all factors that tend to have adverse effects on human health in the environment are brought under control. With support from the Assembly, the department ensures that this responsibility is executed in accordance with the Environmental Health laws and regulations of Ghana.

Mission

To provide quality environmental health services through inspection, enforcement, education and community engagement to protect public health and promote a safe, clean and healthy environment for all residents of the Cape Coast Metropolis.

Core Functions & Responsibilities

  • Inspect all premises to ensure compliance with public health rules and regulations.
  • Organize screening of food handlers for certification.
  • Collect and collate data on environmental health services.
  • Supervise and monitor environmental health activities.
  • Conduct research in the environmental health field.
  • Enforce compliance with environmental health standards.
  • Promotion of environmental health and cleanup campaigns.
  • Promote the construction of approved domestic toilet facilities.
  • Investigate environmental health related complaints and respond to enquiries.
  • Monitor noise levels, air and water quality and disease trend.
  • Inspect small scale industrial establishments to ensure compliance with environmental health standards.
  • Supervise the exhumation and reburial of unclaimed or unidentified corpses.
  • Post-mortem and ante-mortem inspection of animals and carcasses meant for public consumption.
