Honourable Ernest Arthur, Mayor of Cape Coast last night addressed members of the Tybee City Council as part of events to link The Door of No Return, Cape Coast and the Lazarreto, Tybee Island in Georgia, United States of America. In his statement, Mayor Arthur underscored the importance of partnership between States and expressed his excitement about the opportunity to connect Cape Coast and Tybee Island.
The Cape Coast Castle served as exit for many Africans who were sold into slavery. Tybee Island on the other hand, served as a recipient of these slaves.
Mayor Brian West, the Mayor of the City of Tybee Island has honoured Honourable Ernest Arthur with the Key to the City. This signifies unlimited access to the city by the Mayor of Cape Coast.
Earlier, the delegation from Cape Coast and members of Tybee Island Martin Luther King Human Rights Organisation were at the Lazarreto Creed to perform a ceremony to join the Door of No Return and the Lazarreto.
The Mayor and his delegation which is made up of the Central Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Marigold Assan and other City officials arrived in the City of Tybee Island last Saturday.
